If you're in the market for a new headshot, you may be wondering what to wear. Dressing the part is essential when it comes to headshots - after all, you want to look your best! Here are some tips from professional photographer Karen Bengall on how to dress for your next headshot session.
Dress in a way that makes you feel confident. You want to look comfortable and like yourself in your headshot, so choose an outfit that you feel good in. Headshots are often used for professional purposes, so you want to dress in a way that feels appropriate. Take some time to think about how people perceive your industry and what they expect of professionals in it. Wear something timeless and classic. Headshots are typically used for professional purposes, so it's best to avoid trendy styles that may go out of fashion soon.
Choose versatile pieces. When choosing what to wear for your headshot, it's important to choose pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. Stick to solid colours and minimal patterns - this will help you look polished in your headshot. You don't want any busy prints or loud colours competing for attention in your photo., after all the headshot is about you and your face, not your outfit. Tailored pieces always look better than clothes that are too baggy or ill-fitting. Choose clothing that is flattering to your body type. If you're not sure what looks good on you, ask a friend for their opinion or bring some options to your session. Bring several options with you to the shoot. It can be helpful to have a few different outfits to choose from, since you may find that some outfits look better than others in your headshot photos. If you're not sure which outfit to choose, ask the photographer for their opinion. They will be able to help you choose an outfit that looks great in the photos and makes you look your best.
We all have a favourite item of clothing, but if you haven't worn it for some time, it's often best to try it on beforehand, just to make sure it still fits you well and you're still happy in it. In general, it's best to avoid clothing that is too tight or too loose. Baggy clothes can make you look sloppy, while tight clothes can be unflattering and constricting. Make sure all of your garments fit well and are cleaned and ironed well and crease free. This will help you look polished and put together in your headshot. Headshots are usually taken from the chest up, so you want to make sure your top fits well and the neckline sits comfortably.
Headshots are about you and your expression, so I generally advise avoiding lots of jewellery and accessories, but if you do wear jewellery it's suggested to keep your accessories minimal. Headshots are not the time to wear large, chunky jewellery or statement pieces. If anything, wear simple, classic and elegant jewellery that is small enough to be subtle. If you have facial piercings, it's best to remove them for your headshot session as they can be distracting in photos.
Wearing eyeglasses for headshots is not an issue. Please bring any anti-glare or anti-reflective glasses you may have with you if possible. Those specialized lens coatings make it simpler to manage unwanted reflections in your headshots. Adding variety to your chosen photographs by using and without glasses is another approach to add interest to the selection of your final images. If you can, try to avoid wearing your glasses or sunglasses before you arrive for your headshot session if you don't need to wear them. The bridge of the nose is prone to receiving marks from wearing glasses.
